Iyanla Vanzant: 5 Steps To Breaking A Negative Pattern

Q: How do I break a negative pattern?

1. First, notice it.

Maybe you always end up in drama-filled relationships, or you go through endless cycles of overreacting and guilt. The challenge with negative patterns is that they're unconscious. But we can train our minds to recognize them by paying attention to our emotions: When we feel pain we've felt countless times before, we must ask ourselves why.

2. Second, know its cause.

We fall into patterns because we fail to face reality. We return to the same bad situation, hoping that this time will be different. I've said it before: What we resist will persist. When we aren't honest with ourselves about what we feel, we are doomed to repeat our mistakes.

3. Slow down!

Many patterns occur because we move too fast to see things for what they really are. We meet someone today and go on a date tomorrow, and by the next day, we're already imagining the wedding. The key is to manage our expectations to see what's really occurring right in front of us.

4. Forgive yourself.

Forgiveness clears out the residue of the past. Until we forgive ourselves for what we did, did not do, or should have done, we will repeat our patterns. But when the mind is clear of guilt and shame, it focuses on what is here instead of what was, and lets us take each moment as it comes.

5. Check in.

When we recognize that we're doing (again) what we've always done, we can't wait: We must stop ourselves in the moment. Ask yourself, What am I doing, and why? Breathe yourself through that thought -- and make another choice right then and there.

Event: Do Not Despise The Days Of Little Beginnings !

About 2000 years ago, a young man began a new move. He was unknown except in his little community. Even the people in his village rejected him. They believed nothing would become of his God- given dream to deliver the world.

His life was short. He was killed few months after his 33rd birthday. It appeared that all hope was lost. When asked what he had achieved within this period, all he could account for were 12 followers. Most of them were former fishermen, one of them was a former area boy (tout), another was a tax-collector who knew how to steal money from people, one of them was a thief that sold him to the people who eventually nailed him to the cross.

That was how Christianity began. Today, there are more than 2.1 billion Christians on planet earth.

Unchecked proximity breeds immorality: 6 Reasons Why You Must Be Sexually Accountable

"Temptation is like a knife that may either cut the meat or the throat of a man; it may be his food or his poison, his exercise or his destruction" – John Owen
"The prince of this world has tried me and has found nothing in me." Imagine if Bill Clinton, Dominique Strauss Khan, Eliot Spitzer, Mike Tyson, Tiger Woods all had people they could be accountable to.

Why should you be accountable?
1. Keeps you away from excesses - We all have the tendency to go overboard as humans especially when you have subjected yourself to your flesh and that was why one
of the foremost Jewish missionaries of all time Paul of Tarsus said 'I put my body under and make it obey me lest when I have witnessed to others I become a cast away.' It
has been discovered that passionate leaders are also men of high sex drive and that is why it is so easy for a leader to sleep with several woman who are under him and they
would all keep quiet until nemesis catches up with him.
Have you asked yourself the purpose of a balcony in a house or the purpose of road dividers? All those measures are put in place so that we don't go overboard.
2. Saves you from illicit relationships – One of my accountability partners was holding me accountable one day and had noticed one of my female mentees and was asking me questions about her closeness to me and he said
something that stuck with me: 'Unchecked proximity will breed immorality'. That brought me back to life because it suddenly dawned on me that we can all get carried away by our quest to assist people that we wouldn't know at what
point we have removed our boundaries of protection. Who
are the people around you that can question your closeness to certain people especially the opposite sex and who you can be honest with?
A Jewish Proverb says 'If you fail in the days of adversity you are a bad specimen' Truth is a lot of leaders are trying so hard to hide their weaknesses from their followers so that they can retain the respect and authority they have over the people. You can't be an effective leader if your effectiveness is measured by the people that pay obeisance to you.
3. Increased Integrity - Integrity has been defined as the alignment of your words, thoughts and actions and it saves the day at all times. The greatest challenge many of us have
is that we feel we would lose respect when we open up our challenges but on the contrary you actually gain more respect because it takes a great man to confess his faults. He
that covers his faults will not prosper, but whosoever confesses and forsakes shall have mercy. I have people I run to when my personal strength can no longer carry me and that is why I often counsel people that they should allow their friends (mentors) carry them. We all have seasons of
strengths and weaknesses and the test of true friendship is when you are able to carry your friend in moments of despair. Never try to protect your position or status. Look
for help everywhere you can find it and you would realize that your stocks will rise afterwards.
4. It fosters effective self examination – A wise man once
said 'unbridled freedom may seem like a great blessing but it can also be a recipe for disaster'. The moment you become superman that no one is holding accountable there
is no way you won't get into error.

In my study of great leaders who fell into sexual compromise I realised that many of them started so well but at some point became larger than life and the moment they
stopped being accountable it was so easy to mess up. I realise that too many leaders are just using followership as ego booster so that more people can respect you. That they are coming to your meetings doesn't really make you the
leader. Can they really see through you? Is their perception of you the reality or you are a spider man?
5. It sustains and multiplies your success – A lot of followers would respect a leader who holds himself by higher standards and who doesn't rationalise his faults and
mistakes. There was the story of a certain coach who had started sleeping with some of the young girls in his team in the US. Then one of his younger protégées went to see him and gently told him that the story is spreading with a suggestion for him to get help only for this leader to attack the younger guy for having the audacity to question the way he was living his life and dropped him from his backroom
staff. Of course that leader went into error and today is an object of ridicule and scorn in many circles. Accountability never kills; it protects you.
6. You attract God's mercy – I love that proverb of Solomon that says 'He that covers his sins won't prosper but he that confesses and forsakes shall have mercy.' There
is no point going ahead in error or making a doctrine out of what is out rightly clear to all. The fall in most cases is not what kills the strong but the quest to cover up.
There is nothing happening or that has happened to you that has not happened before and a lot of men who learnt to deal with their issues early enough have been rescued from what would have consumed them.
Never get to that level where there are no people in your life that you can be accountable to and don't ever get to that level where you feel you have become an island of revelation. Every counselor needs a counselor just like every leader needs a leader.
Always remember that for it to be a sex scandal it must first of all be a secret because you can't be scandalized with what is an open secret and that is why you don't have to wait before your secret busts into the open; you need to open up
and get help. The weight of your secret sins is a direct reflection of the depth of your compromise. What weight have you been carrying? Are you still the same leader or you are now a spider-man living a dual life?
I often say to leaders that every man is only a foolish decision away from misbehaving and in actual fact there are no strong men really; you only have well positioned men because a man who positions himself in the area of his weakness will fall no matter his determination.
Every sexual misbehaviour needs an ideal environment for it to happen.
I have often wondered why nobody pounces on a girl to have sex in an open place. For sex to happen
you must have been found in the kind of situation we call
questionable privacy and that is why structure is quite
critical to you staying above sex scandals.

Breaking Free from the Chains of Guilt

When painful situations arise in our life very often there is a load of guilt that goes along with it. We seek to find answers as to why we're hurting and all too often that results in a pointed finger back at ourselves--even if it was the other party who wanted to part ways.

When it comes to a failed relationship...

You may feel guilty because the relationship broke up. But you have to really evaluate the reason for the dissolution. Was it because you wouldn't change who you are? Was it because you did something that hurt them and it resulted in their separation from you?

Only you and that other person know the truth, but if you are feeling guilt for choosing yourself, your beliefs, your visions, your goals in life, it's time to release this emotion. It is eating you from the inside out and paralysing.

When it comes to losing a loved one in death...

There is nothing more painful than losing a loved one. It leaves behind a void so vast that it's hard to comprehend how you are ever going to return to normal. Remember, it will take time to work through all of your feelings.

One of these emotions will likely include guilt, either over something you said, or didn't say, something you did, or didn't do. But what wasted energy to worry about something that you cannot go back and change. Accept yourself for being human and know that person knew you loved them (our loved ones always have a way of knowing).

When it comes to a personal assault...

Victims of assault may reason that it was their fault. They shouldn't have been where they were, when they were there. The "if only" become plentiful. But, remember, you are not to blame for what happened to you. The person who violated you in whatever manner--they are responsible. They are the ones who should feel shame and guilt--not you.

In all of these cases, think of it this way: there's no way a bird could fly tethered to the ground. Likewise if we allow ourselves to be limited with the chains of guilt, we can never fully shine and become the people we are meant to become.

How can you break free of the chains of guilt?
Write in a journal. Include what you feel guilty about, rip it apart and really analyse where it stems from. From there, you'll know exactly what you need to target and work on. You might realize you really have nothing to feel guilty over!
Remember you are only human. Don't expect perfection of yourself. If making mistakes meant the end of the world, the earth would have stopped spinning a lot time ago.
Forgive yourself. This is a really tough one, but as you work through your self-healing journey, you will find that this eventually comes.
Trust in yourself enough to know that you did the right thing for you.
Realize you have the right to be happy.

Inspiring Story: Christabel Ofori

How do you want the world to know you? A brief Introduction.

I am an easy going, fun-loving, optimistic and enthusiastic young woman; a chemical engineer by profession, a singer and writer by passion, a philanthropist by character, and an up and coming social entrepreneur. I love maths and science, and love to solve problems, and would always accept healthy challenges. I hate to see people treated badly or less than they deserve. I also believe that every problem has a solution, embedded in someone who needs just a little inspiration and motivation to put it to action. And this is one of the reasons I started the IHAV Foundation, an organization which seeks to identify and challenge the African youth to envision change and act on it.

What's the major challenge you currently face as a group?

IHAV Foundation's journey has been a very challenging and ambitious one, as well as very time and thought consuming, but it has been very worthwhile. The major challenge has been getting people to support the vision. People show interest in the vision but show little commitment to help out in any way they can. We need all the help we can to put Africa back on its pedestal.

What are the responsibilities of the youth today, towards the development of the society according to you?

We, as youth, are responsible for our own well-being and development, the well-being of our families, and the total development of our societies and countries. We can no longer sit and wait to see it happen. We have to make it happen. Whatever we have been waiting for, we have to do it ourselves. We should no longer wait to go to school first, or be employed by another person, or be in a key political position; we have run out of that time, we need to be and make the difference. We hold it in our hands, it only requires a renewing and change of mind. But we cannot do it alone as individuals in separate corners, we must collaborate and work towards a common vision of better livelihoods for all.

What motivated you to start something on your own?

Generally, I try to motivate myself but what pushed me more to start the IHAV Foundation was the kind of interesting and exciting accomplishments I saw other young people like myself do and share, especially after I had attended the South American Business Forum in Argentina. These young people rose up to the challenge, defied the odds and did it. I knew that if they could, then I could too.

What have been the diverse projects that you've worked on?

I have volunteered with students and lecturers from the University of Texas-Austin to set up a sachet water enterprise for a small community in Ghana, in an attempt to provide employment and help them better the quality of life. My major project has been the first IHAV conference last July, which brought to-gether young brilliant, outstanding and passionate changemakers from different countries in Africa, to reason together and start projects aimed at benefitting our immediate societies and countries. I have also started a project called PINK Diamonds, which I refer to as my 25th birthday present to my country. I intend to inspire, mentor and groom young girls living in rural communities to become bold and smart and overcome societal and gender barriers.

Lessons in the course of Life are infinite. Can you share any 3 Unforget-table lessons of your Life?

My first lesson is this: People are usually more interested to join in your glory, than to help out in your struggles, don't let it discourage you.

Lesson 2: People will always talk about you and what you do no matter what; and mostly, it may be negative. Don't compromise on your values just to please them. Do what is right, and in the end they will appreciate what you stood for.

Lesson 3: It takes a lot of effort, commitment and sacrifice to make it to the top. Don't envy people's successes, rather try to learn from their experiences and stay committed to your vision.

What is the message that you want our readers to take back from your story?

Our life's journey is not a smooth and straight one. There are hurdles along the way, not designed to make us fall, but rather positioned to help us discover how high we can really jump. You can do it if you put your mind to it; believe in yourself, trust God, and put that vision into action

Living a Disciplined Life

It takes determination to live a disciplined life. Do you know there are ladies who go to the club and never come back? For some, their drinks are drugged, some guys have night accidents as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol, some girls are used for rituals, some are initiated into secret societies. The question is: Is clubbing Bad? Remember the maxim. "You must always be at the right place at the right time". Never you be in a place you know the grace of God won't protect you. Don't abuse the suffeciency of God's mercies.

Its a decision to club and a decision to use your night hours to reflect on how better your life could possibly be or have a peaceful sleep instead. We have the freedom to act, but our actions either make or mar our future. Exposure has both negative and positive sides. Why do young people do things they would on a good day won't want their Parents to be aware of? Living a disciplined life entails a whole lot of sacrifices. A story of a young man who went for a wedding ceremony. While at the event, a very fair gorgeous lady approached him. He got so attracted and began a conversation with her. After then, he stylishly asked for the lady out and asked to spend the night with him. After series of persuasion, the lady agreed. On their way home, the lady sexually aroused the young man. So while driving home, the girl put her mouth on the private parts of the man till he was sexually satisfied. While at the middle of a bridge, the lady asked for the man to stop the car, so she could spit out the content from the man's private part away. She instructed the man not to look back, but he stubbornly did. Only to find the lady jumping into the sea from the bridge. Then he came down to discover she was no longer there. Then he knew his life was finished. The life of that young man was never the same. He started experiencing continuous bad luck, all round failure and all sort of negativity was prominent in his life. The lady had sucked his destiny, the lady manipulated him with what she took out of him (sperm)

Do u know you have to be careful about whatsoever comes out from your body, your hair, your sperm, your menstral blood, your sweat, your blood, your nails, your saliva. These contents are what is being used against a person because it's a part of you that represents your whole. The young man felt he had caught a big fish to spend the night with, but whereas, a big fish caught him and dealt with him mercilessly. He sought spiritual help from a prominent bible believing church and attended series of deliverance sessions and through the process shared his story.
So many young guys sleep with random girls and go away with them. (Only in a short run). Many ladies follow Sugar daddies who spend extravagantly on them in exchange of their virtues. Many people steal and amass wealth. The end will tell. Do we most times measure the lavish spending on young girls by older men who sleep with them, compared with what the young girl offers in return? We most times can't eat our cake and have it. Living a disciplined life is our key legacy on earth.
The best way we can live a disciplined life is to itemise our few weakpoints, pray about them, tell God to take control. Make resolutions and promise God you won't do such acts again. Living a disciplined life would make you a responsible and better person. You would be proud of yourself.

Youthful exuberance has resulted in elongated years of struggle. A journey of four years, could be extended for forty years if precautions are not taken. As students, concentrate in school, avoid negative friends, avoid clubbing, avoid exam malpractice. As a working class man/woman, be sincere in your dealings, be hard working, be innovative. As a single youth, be prayerful, be disciplined, keep yourself. As a married person, be faithful to your spouse, appreciate your spouse daily. Tell your husband you love him, tell your wife she's beautiful and kiss her on her forehead daily. As a parent, train your child in the way of the Lord.

Young people should not be carried away by the lost of the flesh. Do not let the desire for money, fame and lust take a reasonable part of You. Be patient, prioritise your life, live according to biblical principles and in retrospect, you would reap good fruits.

Lessons From The Soup

Any time you are confused, check the purpose of your life because it the compass for your life.

God does not care about where you are rather, where you are going.

Don't mistake God's polishing for punishment because His polishing only makes you shine brighter.

Faith is not about talking but knowing God. The extent you know God determines the size of your faith.

A soup is not a soup when it has not passed through the process of fire.

You can only be ready when you undergo process!

GOD knows what to do with your case, that's why He works at His own pace.

Don't be one-sided when you are praying. God's response is what you need not what you are asking for.

It is what God knows that will take to you to expected end

No matter what you are passing through, always look out for what is in it for GOD, not for yourself, because you were created for His pleasure.

Faith is not about quoting scriptures, it's about knowing GOD.

There's no guarantee of happiness in the gospel.

When praying, GOD's response is what I need, not what I'm seeking GOD for.

The difference between Surrender and Sacrifice.

Surrender is giving up something when it is requested while sacrifice goes beyond submission because it has to do with submission before a request is made.

Sharing the little in your hands with others without being callous releases the power of God and causes multiplication of the same.

Know who you are and the things that belong to you in the hands of God.

Be careful when the demand is coming more and more (whether it is in your service to the Lord or giving to others) that you don't allow the spirit of callousness to suppress compassion

An impulsive spirit does no good because it speaks anyhow.

An impulsive spirit sends hurtful things.

Wherever you find an impulsive spirit, there will also be a self-seeking, judgmental spirit present and we risk missing what God is doing/His instruction for the hour.

Self-seeking spirit breaks relationships, creates denominations and cliques.

If you are not a witness to something, learn to keep quiet and even when you are a witness, keep quiet also.

Four things characterize the life of a child:

1. Lowest and most vulnerable.

2. Tender and free of guile

3. They are teachable and trusting

4. They read no meaning to things

If we cannot accept the lowest person amongst us, we cannot say we are living a sentimental free life.

Can Drugs Make You Smarter?

A new type of drug is on the streets, this one called nootropics. Haven’t heard of them? Nootropics are also known as smart drugs, brain steroids or memory enhancers. Whereas some medicine provides remedy or relief from infection or pain, smart drugs play a role in helping to enhance the natural skills of individuals, particularly students or those interested in being able to think and act clearer, quicker and more efficiently. Yet the question remains: do smart drugs actually make people smarter?

Valentine's Special: Funmibi Ojo' on FEB '14'

"...But you can purpose in your heart that you would not defile yourself..."
I've had occasions to listen to few (among many others) ladies bitter experiences about their sexual escapades...and on the long run when you ask some of them how it all started; they say: "I broke my 'Gate' on Val's day". Imagine someone coming to you and saying, he/she will give you some material things (that will not last for a long period), in exchange for your 'treasures, virtues, destiny (things that have to do with your life);

Will it be wise for you to give something of great value for something of no value??? NO!!!
What a pity for so many singles/youths, and unfaithful married men/women who will decide to sell/exchange their 'birthrights for one morsel of food', who will allow 'five minutes' enjoyment/pleasure that could be avoided to thwart that great destiny God has given them just in one day! Why would one want to exchange a glorious bright future for just ephemeral/material things? Why would one want to sacrifice the 'ULTIMATE for the IMMEDIATE'? WHY???Believe it or not, on this day (Feb. 14), Hell rejoices over those who have decided to destroy their destinies via immoral dealings! A lot of ladies will be willing to sell their virtues for peanuts; especially now that the 'craze for BB and Android phones is on the increase'. A lot of men because of pleasure, will also be willing to sell their glory for anything in 'skirt'. Some will even decide to pick a lady on a 'red zone' just in the 'name of VAL!'. This day, a lot of evil seeds are sown into their foundation which later turn out to be thorns to choke them up! This day has been the genesis of the problems in many lives today; having a lot to battle with! Know ye not that sex is a covenant? Different men/ladies! Different curses! Different covenants! Different evil spirits! OH NO, PLEASE, WATCH IT!My dear, must we follow the multitudes to do evil?
This day can be celebrated by lending a helping hand to those in need and giving them the greatest gift of love by telling them about God. To those in courtship and those married; celebrate love everyday and not reduce it to just a day!
My dear, perhaps, you have always 'messed' up yourself on this day and you now regret your past; why not come to God, who is ever willing and ready to forgive you; He can erase your past and give you a glorious future. Don't wait, till a permanent damage is done! You can save yourself from that future agony and let heaven rejoice over you by deciding like Daniel from today to keep your body undefiled and present it to God as a living sacrifice! You can save yourself having to tell a lot of stories about your past to your future husband/wife! Don't fall for the traps/snares that the devil has set for this day! Don't be another victim! Don't let your life be shattered!
Follow God and let Him honour you; the best and permanent kind of blessings lies with God.
"...for they that know their God shall be strong and do exploits!

The Seeker of Truth

After years of searching, the seeker was told to go to a cave, in which he would find a well. 'Ask the well what is truth', he was advised, 'and the well will reveal it to you'. Having found the well, the seeker asked that most fundamental question. And from the depths came the answer, 'Go to the village crossroad: there you shall find what you are seeking'.

Full of hope and anticipation the man ran to the crossroad to find only three rather uninteresting shops. One shop was selling pieces of metal, another sold wood, and thin wires were for sale in the third. Nothing and no one there seemed to have much to do with the revelation of truth.

Disappointed, the seeker returned to the well to demand an explanation, but he was told only, 'You will understand in the future.' When the man protested, all he got in return were the echoes of his own shouts. Indignant for having been made a fool of - or so he thought at the time - the seeker continued his wanderings in search of truth. As years went by, the memory of his experience at the well gradually faded until one night, while he was walking in the moonlight, the sound of sitar music caught his attention. It was wonderful music and it was played with great mastery and inspiration.

Profoundly moved, the truth seeker felt drawn towards the player. He looked at the fingers dancing over the strings. He became aware of the sitar itself. And then suddenly he exploded in a cry of joyous recognition: the sitar was made out of wires and pieces of metal and wood just like those he had once seen in the three stores and had thought it to be without any particular significance.

At last he understood the message of the well: we have already been given everything we need: our task is to assemble and use it in the appropriate way. Nothing is meaningful so long as we perceive only separate fragments. But as soon as the fragments come together into a synthesis, a new entity emerges, whose nature we could not have foreseen by considering the fragments alone.

The Last Ride

'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knick-knacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.
'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.' 'Oh, you're such a good boy', she said.
When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?' 'It's not the shortest way',' I answered quickly. 'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice.' I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left', she continued in a soft voice. 'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.
'What route would you like me to take?' I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired. Let's go now'. We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her.
I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. 'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse. 'Nothing', I said 'You have to make a living', she answered. 'There are other passengers', I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. 'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy', she said. 'Thank you.' I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.
Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life. I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life. We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware - beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

How to Discover Your Life Purpose in About 20 Minutes

How do you discover your real purpose in life? I'm not talking about your job, your daily responsibilities, or even your long-term goals. I mean the real reason why you're here at all — the very reason you exist.
Perhaps you're a rather nihilistic person who doesn't believe you have a purpose and that life has no meaning. Doesn't matter.

Not believing that you have a purpose won't prevent you from discovering it, just as a lack of belief in gravity won't prevent you from tripping. All that a lack of belief will do is make it take longer, so if you're one of those people, just change the number 20 in the title of this blog entry to 40 (or 60 if you're really stubborn). Most likely though if you don't believe you have a purpose, then you probably won't believe what I'm saying anyway, but even so, what's the risk of investing an hour just in case?
Here's a story about Bruce Lee which sets the stage for this little exercise. A master martial artist asked Bruce to teach him everything Bruce knew about martial arts. Bruce held up two cups, both filled with liquid. "The first cup," said Bruce, "represents all of your knowledge about martial arts. The second cup represents all of my knowledge about martial arts. If you want to fill your cup with my knowledge, you must first empty your cup of your knowledge."

If you want to discover your true purpose in life, you must first empty your mind of all the false purposes you've been taught (including the idea that you may have no purpose at all).
So how to discover your purpose in life? While there are many ways to do this, some of them fairly involved, here is one of the simplest that anyone can do. The more open you are to this process, and the more you expect it to work, the faster it will work for you. But not being open to it or having doubts about it or thinking it's an entirely idiotic and meaningless waste of time won't prevent it from working as long as you stick with it — again, it will just take longer to converge.
Here's what to do:
Take out a blank sheet of paper or open up a word processor where you can type (I prefer the latter because it's faster).
Write at the top, "What is my true purpose in life?"
Write an answer (any answer) that pops into your head. It doesn't have to be a complete sentence. A short phrase is fine.
Repeat step 3 until you write the answer that makes you cry. This is your purpose.
That's it. It doesn't matter if you're a counselor or an engineer or a bodybuilder. To some people this exercise will make perfect sense. To others it will seem utterly stupid. Usually it takes 15-20 minutes to clear your head of all the clutter and the social conditioning about what you think your purpose in life is. The false answers will come from your mind and your memories. But when the true answer finally arrives, it will feel like it's coming to you from a different source entirely.
For those who are very entrenched in low-awareness living, it will take a lot longer to get all the false answers out, possibly more than an hour. But if you persist, after 100 or 200 or maybe even 500 answers, you'll be struck by the answer that causes you to surge with emotion, the answer that breaks you. If you've never done this, it may very well sound silly to you. So let it seem silly, and do it anyway.
As you go through this process, some of your answers will be very similar. You may even re-list previous answers. Then you might head off on a new tangent and generate 10-20 more answers along some other theme. And that's fine. You can list whatever answer pops into your head as long as you just keep writing.
At some point during the process (typically after about 50-100 answers), you may want to quit and just can't see it converging. You may feel the urge to get up and make an excuse to do something else. That's normal. Push past this resistance, and just keep writing. The feeling of resistance will eventually pass.
You may also discover a few answers that seem to give you a mini-surge of emotion, but they don't quite make you cry — they're just a bit off. Highlight those answers as you go along, so you can come back to them to generate new permutations. Each reflects a piece of your purpose, but individually they aren't complete. When you start getting these kinds of answers, it just means you're getting warm. Keep going.
It's important to do this alone and with no interruptions. If you're a nihilist, then feel free to start with the answer, "I don't have a purpose," or "Life is meaningless," and take it from there. If you keep at it, you'll still eventually converge.
When I did this exercise, it took me about 25 minutes, and I reached my final answer at step 106. Partial pieces of the answer (mini-surges) appeared at steps 17, 39, and 53, and then the bulk of it fell into place and was refined through steps 100-106. I felt the feeling of resistance (wanting to get up and do something else, expecting the process to fail, feeling very impatient and even irritated) around steps 55-60. At step 80 I took a 2-minute break to close my eyes, relax, clear my mind, and to focus on the intention for the answer to come to me — this was helpful as the answers I received after this break began to have greater clarity.
Here was my final answer: to live consciously and courageously, to resonate with love and compassion, to awaken the great spirits within others, and to leave this world in peace.
When you find your own unique answer to the question of why you're here, you will feel it resonate with you deeply. The words will seem to have a special energy to you, and you will feel that energy whenever you read them.
Discovering your purpose is the easy part. The hard part is keeping it with you on a daily basis and working on yourself to the point where you become that purpose.
If you're inclined to ask why this little process works, just put that question aside until after you've successfully completed it. Once you've done that, you'll probably have your own answer to why it works. Most likely if you ask 10 different people why this works (people who've successfully completed it), you'll get 10 different answers, all filtered through their individual belief systems, and each will contain its own reflection of truth.
Obviously, this process won't work if you quit before convergence. I'd guesstimate that 80-90% of people should achieve convergence in less than an hour. If you're really entrenched in your beliefs and resistant to the process, maybe it will take you 5 sessions and 3 hours, but I suspect that such people will simply quit early (like within the first 15 minutes) or won't even attempt it at all. But if you're drawn to read this blog (and haven't been inclined to ban it from your life yet), then it's doubtful you fall into this group.
Give it a shot! At the very least, you'll learn one of two things: your true purpose in life -or- that you
Steve Pavlina
