JUNGLE JUSTICE IS NO JUSTICE. By Barr. Okeke Onyebuchi

Justice can be defined as “Fairness in the way people are treated”. Jungle justice simply put can be defined as a form of extra judicial killing where the victim is deprived the rule of law and justice is meted out in a barbaric and appalling fashion usually through stoning or burning the individual in the full glare of the public. In simpler words Jungle Justice is synonymous with Injustice which is defined as “a situation in which people are treated very unfairly and not given their rights”.

Jungle justice has become very rampant in Africa and Nigeria as the fastest way of meting out justice to criminal suspects caught in the act; however this form of justice is highly barbaric, demonic and inhumane in the 21^st century and must be condemned totally. Doing my research for this paper, I discovered that all the materials I got were limited to Africa and Nigeria, making me raise the question: Is jungle justice a black man’s curse? If not why doesn't it happen in other developed societies? These questions opened my eyes to a lot of possible answers. Joyce Meyer once said that the first battle of any human starts in the mind. The Nigerian and African mindset must first be purged of so much evil, hate and anger towards his fellow citizens and such anger must be transferred into other well meaning ventures, which could yield positive results. He who has not sinned or committed a crime let him cast the first stone. Everyone has sinned so why don’t we learn to tolerate the suspect until we take him to a police station for proper investigation.

Anyone could be a victim of Jungle justice, so it is not something that should be seen as the poor man’s curse, remembering the case of Aluu 4, those young boys came out from very comfortable backgrounds, but when the evil of Jungle justice was brought upon them, it forgot their prestige and treated them just the same way most victims are usually treated ‘Barbaric’. The video of that incident brought out a public outcry, as much as it was publicized all over the world, and condemned out rightly, it still did not send a shiver down the spine of the next Nigerian living far away from Aluu, because in the Jungle everyone behaves alike. Another similar story of a jungle justice was recorded in Nsukka; a young man Sylvester Ezema was allegedly burnt to death for impregnating a woman and her daughter. For crying out loud, is this worth Jungle Justice? From this instance we see that Jungle justice has left the realms of armed robbery and all the more violent crimes to simple offences like ‘who we sleep with in private’, do not be surprised when some group of people start burning kids for ‘stealing meat in their mothers pot’ or when they start ‘burning students for cheating in examination halls’. Recently, another incident took place in Ejigbo, where some women were accused of stealing pepper; they were molested and bathed with pepper as their punishment. Away from Nigeria, the very recent precisely the 8th of October 2013, a lynch mob killed three Nigerians in Guinea Bissau, who were accused of child kidnap in Bissau. HOW INHUMANE!

I do not want to tilt on the sides of emotions, as the videos of such incidents can do a better job to touch on the human emotions, but it seems it does not last long because as they are rounding up one jungle justice in my backyard, another is taking place at your backyard. So what then could be the cause of this evil act? Because, as it is fondly said that it is circumstances that make crayfish bend, so why then as the Nigerian populace decided to bend in this satanic acts. No matter the cause, it is not justified for another human to take the life of another.

1. Ineffective Legal System: The Legal system in Nigeria can be regarded as one of the slowest in the world, where court cases linger for as much as 21 years and suspects are deprived fast and speedy hearing of their cases, so much that they most times spend out their sentence in prison awaiting trials, or most times gruesome crimes are swept under the carpet to die a natural death, e.g. of such cases are: The Murder of Bola Ige; The murder of Chief Funsho Williams; The Fuel Subsidy scam; The Halliburton Case as well as The Farouk Lawan’s case, the list is endless. Most cases are swept under the Carpet and they Most citizens do not believe in the police system and its ability to uphold law and order, the general failure of the police in upholding law and order in society, has warranted people to be their own police. The Nigerian police must work on their public relations, and always see Nigerians as their friends, despite the fact that most Nigerians do not see them that way, as we can remember vividly, that during the Aluu 4 mayhem, the Nigerian police was on the scene supporting the actions of the masses. But then these should in no way make us forget the fact that in Nigeria the rule of law prevails and the inadequacies of the law enforcement agencies does not actually give any individual or group the right to trample on the rule of law. In the words of a onetime Justice Of the supreme court, Oputa JSC, “the establishment of a court system is a great milestone in human Journey, we are reminded how in a state of savagery and jungle justice, all men were arm and law unto themselves. Development and civilization means that courts were established and men dropped that weapon and brought their causes to the court’. No matter how it sounds, two wrongs can never make a right. If a well-known notorious criminal like Pius Anini and his gang could be charged before a court, granted fair hearing before eventually executed, who and what offenses could be committed by anyone that would deny them fair trial. With jungle justice there is usually no fairness or patience to listen to sides thereby depriving the laws of natural justice that says “Hear the other party.” The other party must always be heard, as there are always two sides to a coin.

The constitution by virtue of Sec 36(1) provides that a person suspected to have committed an offense must be given ‘fair hearing and brought before a court or tribunal established by law’. Sec 36(5) to state thus; ‘Every person who is charged with a criminal offense shall be presumed to be INNOCENT until he is proved guilty”. This means that only a court has the power to pronounce a person guilty until a competent court declares a person guilty, they remain innocent. Therefore one can rightly presume that all those innocently killed through the execution of jungle justice were actually innocent. The Constitution of Nigeria is the guiding principle of the people, it’s not one that must be obeyed by a selected few but must be adhered to by all and sundry. Any state that it’s citizen cannot obey it’s constitution is not worthy to be regarded as developed and should be seen as a failed state.

2. Unemployment/ Illiteracy: Unemployment is another factor that causes this barbarism. Unemployment rate in this clime is so alarming. In fact most of the people that get themselves involved in jungle justice are those who know nothing of the alleged crime in the first place. Jobless passersby who have been idle all day. Tackling unemployment is very necessary if we need to curb this menace. Imagine a situation where all Nigerians have a meaningful job during the day, they would spend less time thinking of whom to kill, but rather focus all that energy into something more creative. The bible says, “My People perish for lack of knowledge.” Nigerians are always quick at judging ourselves, once you see a mob scene and ask the man standing by what happened, he may not know the full gist of what happened, the first thing you here from his mouth is “Na Thief”, no one ever wants to get to the root of the matter, most Nigerians think that as they kill one supposed criminal, that would reduce crime, well i wish to say categorically, that Jungle justice cannot reduce crime. It just makes us look like animals in the international community.

3. Failure of Leadership: As John Maxwell rightly puts it “Everything begins and ends with leadership.” Our leaders must realize that they also share in the blame of these vicious killings, because they have all the necessary apparatus to make a change, but because they have failed to act, the citizens have decided to react. Our Leaders must stop waiting till the situation is critical, before they act, they must learn to be proactive in their doings. Seminars, Conferences, Sensitization must be done on a daily basis to stop this barbaric act, the government must learn to be responsive and responsible in dealing with the culprits of these acts, as well as take a stand against this menace eating up the morality of individuals.

In Nigeria, it is a fact that the human life is not worth more than a pinch of salt, in developed societies, they take care of their animals better than the way they take care of humans here in Nigeria. But should that continue to be the way it is, we must learn to make a drastic stop to these acts and work towards a positive change of heart. The Bible says “Do unto others what you want them to do unto you” no one wants to be burnt like a goat in public, so why do it to others. The streams of justice is one that all always seeks to drink from, as there is a great hunger amongst all to be treated fairly at all times but that is not always the case. Justice is a non-negotiable factor for the development, existence and sustenance of every society. The concept of Justice and security are so delicate that their absence could damage a nation greatly and their abuse could as well be disastrous to any and every nation. However the need for speedy justice may be the recent increasing resort to JUNGLE JUSTICE.

The need to checkmate the advent of this Jungle Justice cannot be over emphasized. This is because Jungle Justice is like an undetected virus/vermin that is on the increase and has so far, caused some greatly irreparable and irrevocable damage to the society because in most cases, wrong or innocent persons are killed and this may or maybe not be discovered until the victims’ are dead. Due process should be followed in everything we do, this is where the police is given a place of function by conducting proper and thorough investigation, and the person upon this investigation is charged to court and then, the prosecution of the said suspect would be by a court of competent Jurisdiction where the offender or suspect is given the right to have a counsel defend him. This is in itself is true Justice! No matter their offense, we must remember that the very essence of the law is for the propagation of order, for avoidance of chaos and anarchy.

Whatever our reasons maybe, Jungle Justice can never be the answer. In the actual sense, Jungle Justice only ends up confusing a confused state, scattering an already scattered people and claiming the life of innocent people. We must stay put to what is right, we must never stoop down to a counterfeit (Jungle Justice) but stick to the original (true Justice). In the words of a Police spokesperson on the issue of jungle justice meted out on an innocent man he said “This unfortunate incident should serve as a lesson to everybody. People should exercise restraint and hand-over all suspected criminals to the law enforcement agents for thorough investigation,” he advised. The Lagos state Commissioner of Police also said “No one has right to take the life of another. We have one suspect in custody already and we will get the others. I will not tolerate impunity by anyone.” Jungle justice is no justice but a monster waiting to destroy us all. Let us act fast and move towards self transformation that is the only way Nigeria can move forward.

ABORTION: CAUSES, METHODS AND CONSEQUENCES

Abortion is an operation or other intervention to end a pregnancy by removing an embryo or fetus from the womb. It is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy or the natural expulsion of a fetus from womb before it is able to survive independently.

Abortion is not just the killing of fetus; it is the murder of a living thing – your child.

It's hard to believe that we actually murder Children. And why? Mostly for the convenience's sake. We don't want to be bothered by emotional trauma or physical discomfort or public humiliation.

Look at some children around you today. This is who you are killing when you get abortion – not things, not even masses of tissue with potential. We are talking about lives with souls.

Did you know that at about:

18 days – the mouth of the baby begin to open

24 days – arms and legs begin to take shape

42 days – fingers are forming on the hand

67 days – hair is now growing

75 days – the baby is seeing.

If a miracle like this is growing inside you, how could killing it even be an option? In his book "Sex: It's worth waiting for", Greg Speck says: "Do you know what I wish for? I wish people had a little window to the womb. If people could only see babies in the womb, babies that are connected to their mothers, they wouldn't so quickly take a life away from them".

At least 50 percent of all individuals who go into an abortion clinic never come out alive. They say it's a safe procedure for mothers, but it's deadly for your baby.

CAUSES OF ABORTION

1. Fear for financial difficulty to raise the child

2. Fear to what people or parents might think or say

3. Fear to the 9 months of pregnancy and to the pain during the labor

4. Health problems

5. Rape

6. Hormonal contraceptives and so many more

7. Unwanted pregnancy: Let me emphasize that I don't believe any pregnancy is unwanted for singles because if you don't want it, you wouldn't involve yourself in sex whether protected or not. The only means I believe, of not getting pregnant is by staying chaste.

The main problem of abortion is psychological and is fear.

Although, some of these causes might look genuine but it is never a reason why you should kill your own baby or why you should advice someone to terminate a life.

METHODS OF ABORTION

Would you like to know what your child goes through if he/she is aborted? (I didn't use "it" because; it is meant for animals but your child is human). Here is some info, but let me first warn you that this isn't pretty, and reading about these methods could cause some emotional trauma, especially if you or someone you know has already had an abortion. If you know you might not be able to stand the pain reading these methods of abortion could bring, I would advice you shouldn't bother going far, you can stop at this point.

Ways to do abortion

1. SUCTION ASPIRATION: The abortionist first paralyzes the cervix (womb opening). He then inserts a hollow plastic tube with knife – like tip into the uterus. The tube is connected to a powerful with a suction force 29 times more powerful than a home vacuum cleaner. The procedure tears the baby's body into pieces and hose the frequency jerks as pieces of the baby become lodged. The placenta is then cut from the inner wall of the uterus and the scraps are sucked out into a bottle. As the baby head can't pass through the womb, it is introduced into the womb an instrument that compresses the little head and then takes it out.

2. DILATATION AND CURETAGE: This is similar to the suction aspiration except that the abortionist inserts a curette (a hook – shaped steel knife) into the uterus, which is used to cut the baby into pieces. The baby is then smashed and scraped from the wall of the uterus out through the cervix and discarded. As you can imagine, bleeding is usually profuse.

3. DILATATION AND EVACUATION: This method is usually performed after the third month. Instead of the hook – shaped knife usually used in D&C abortions, a pair forceps (just like the shape of pliers) is inserted into the womb to grasp part of the fetus. The teeth of the forceps twist and tear the bones of the unborn child. This process is repeated until the fetus is totally dismembered and remove. Usually the spine must be snapped and the skull crushed in order to remove them.

4. SAALINE INJECTION (SALT POISONING): This procedure is usually done after four months. Why? Because a certain amount of fluid needs to have built up in the sac around the baby. A long needle is thrust through the abdomen into the sac. The abortionist will suck out some of the fluid and then inject a salt solution. The baby will swallow this.

The child starts to jerk and kick, suffering severely because they are literally being burned alive by the solution inside the womb. If there ever ought to be a safe, protected place, it should be the womb. I wish both parents had to watch this procedure.

It will take the child more than an hour to die. If the woman has been pregnant for five months or longer, she will feel the baby fighting and kicking to live.

Usually within 24 hours, she will go into labor and deliver this tortured baby, dead, with skin burned away. But there is another problem. After all that suffering, the baby may still be born alive. Imagine wanting to live that much. The abortionist will sometimes take this poor burned baby and place it in a corner unattended to. Many times they will place a towel over the baby's face to induce suffocation, so that the baby will die. I think in other situations we would call this murder.

5. PROSTAGLADIN ABORTION: This is a hormone that induces labor. This form of abortion uses chemicals which cause the uterus to contract intensely, pushing out the developing baby. The contractions are more violent than normal natural contractions, so the baby dies from trauma of delivery. Many, however, have also been born alive.

6. RU – 486: This is a drug that produces an abortion taken after the mother misses her period. Its effect is to block a crucial hormone that causes the uterine lining to no longer provide food, fluid, and oxygen to the baby. Without this hormone the baby can't survive. When the abortion is complete the mother will see a tiny blob of tissue – her baby. (Note that RU – 486 is not a contraceptive because it does not prevent fertilization or implantation. It is used only after the mother missed her period and the baby is at least two to three weeks old).

I hope you see how sick and wrong is it to abort your baby. This is like a medieval torture. Notice that I do not call these people that perform abortions doctors, because doctor takes a pledge to protect life, and these people make a living by killing babies. (They are murderers).

CONSEQUENCES OF ABORTION

Physical Consequences:

1. Drugs containing RU – 486 can cause liver damage, kidney destruction, heart muscle compromise, pulmonary failure, gastrointestinal pathology, and bone marrow suppression. It has also been reported to cause loss of speech function, strokes, and convulsion.

2. An increase risk of breast, cervical, ovarian and liver cancer

3. Complications, such as uterine perforation, cervical laceration, and placenta previa can not only cause very severe problems, but they can also lead to problems in future pregnancies, such as miscarriages, premature births, fetal deaths and children born with handicaps because any problem or change with a woman's reproductive organ may affect the development of her children.

4. Infection, including pelvic inflammatory disease, occurs in 30% of abortions; if not stopped soon enough, they can leave a woman barren.

5. Tremendous increase in the level of promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases

6. Up to 127% risk for premature births in subsequent pregnancies; the rate is higher with multiple abortions

7. Death

Psychological consequences

1. Diminished respect for human life

2. Denial, guilt, sadness, and grieving at the death of the aborted baby that would be a woman's natural, feminine feelings and emotions

3. Psychological reactions like alcoholism, smoking, drug abuse, sexual addictions, and self destructive behavior.

4. Post abortion syndrome: depression to suicide or attempted suicide

5. Overwhelming feelings of regret or guilt during later pregnancies

6. Flashback and nightmares

7. Destruction of trust between men and women

8. Increased rates of divorce, domestic violence and child abuse

9. feelings of guilt or regret among fathers

He found out to his dismay that as prayerful and spiritual as he was, he still was sexually aroused, and was being tormented, so he said, by thoughts of women. One day he locked himself in his room and sliced off his penis, because he took literally what Jesus said that if your hand would hinder you from getting to heaven, cut it off. The guy didn't envisage the grave consequences of his action. He was alone in the room and was soon bleeding profusely with pain. Afraid he might die suddenly, he screamed for attention. Neighbours got him quickly to hospital where newsmen found him. "Why did you do this to yourself," they asked him. His sexual thoughts were troubling him from serving God, he said. This is a case of a man trying to deny his sexuality. We shouldn't deny who we are – Sexual Beings. Attraction between the opposite sexes is natural and normal. Rather than deny or pretend about our sexuality, we should accept it and then learn what to do to manage it.

 Your most important sex organ is your mind. If you gain control of your mind, then you have gained control of your life

 The quantity of sex does not make a relationship valid. It is the quality of the relationship that makes sex valid.

 Sex is powerful but not impossible to control‎

 The most appropriate occasion to have sex for the first time is not when you are matured but when you are married

 Sex is not meant for boys and girls, it is meant for men and women in a marriage environment

 Unless you want to get pregnant, you must practice abstinence.

Don't let anyone tell you that with BIRTH CONTROL you cannot get pregnant – that's a lie. The only sure way of not getting pregnant is SELF CONTROL. The most popular mentioned and used birth control tool is condom.

To listen to sex educators you would think condom is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy and STDs.

Everyday sex education classes promote condoms as a means of safe sex or at least safer sex. But the research on condoms provides no such guarantee. It's no longer news that condoms are only 87 percent effective in preventing pregnancy and 69 percent effective in reducing the risk of HIV infection. And according to a study in the 1992 Family Planning Perspectives, 15 percents of married couples who use condoms for birth control end up with an unplanned pregnancy within the first year and 36 percent within the second year. Again also, I posted on my facebook wall few months ago about a guy who called me he was at one of our event early this year, where I spoke on SAFE SEX. He called and said, "I started having sex at 18 and now I'm 27, I just called to let you know that I agree with the fact that condoms are not safe; my three living kids and two aborted babies were all conceived while I was using condoms".

Then what is safe about birth control?

 The only protection against Sexually transmitted diseases is living the abstinence lifestyle

 You can get pregnant or catch Sexually transmitted infections the very first time you have sex, even if you use protection

 Nobody has ever died from not having sex. I have yet to read the obituary section of the newspaper or an obituary bill which says "Gone Too soon, Matthew Adedoyin, 1987 – 2011, died of virginity. Yet there are young people dying because they bought into the lie that they can't be expected to control their sexual urge.

 Sex is a progression. It doesn't just happen unless you are a victim of rape

 The more time you spend listening to music with sexually degrading lyrics, the more likely you are to initiate intercourse and other sexual activities. Finally, the best motivational and inspirational book I've ever read – The bible stated it clear that our body is the temple of the living God. Therefore It must not be defiled which means Pre – Marital Sex (Fornication) and Extra – Marital Sex (Adultery) is not just sin against God, it is also a sin against your body.

The Ugly Side of a Perfectionist

Growing up, we all want to be accepted. For some of us, we work hard at a project, making it perfect in our minds, and when we receive praise for it, we associate acceptance with perfectionism. From that point jon, we strive to be perfect in all that we do and in all that we are.
But perfectionism isn't a good thing most of the time – in fact it's detrimental.

Perfection is Subjective
Everyone's definition of perfection is different. For this reason, trying to be perfect in everything you do is futile. Take for example a project at work. You work hard at making it perfect. But it's only perfect to you. You have someone else review the work you did and they have some criticisms and suggestions for change. But how can this be you wonder, after all, it's perfect!
Many perfectionists don't take criticism very well. This is because they tend to see the things they do as being perfect. When someone else doesn't agree, they take offense to it.

Wasted Time
Related to the example cited above is wasted time. Thinking about the project, you most likely spent countless hours on it, making it perfect. When others review it and see things that need change, you have to go back and work on the project again. Had you simply made the project "good enough" you could have saved yourself hours.
For those non-perfectionists reading this, the term "good enough" might not sit well with you. I am not suggesting perfectionists be lazy or complete half-hearted work, I am suggesting the complete opposite. "Good enough" is the equivalent to great work done by a non-perfectionist. You have to realize that the perfectionist is a time waster by working on things until they see perfection. So "good enough" is still great work with many hours of time saved.

Long Completion Time
When a perfectionist works on a project, they spend countless hours on said project. This means that it will take a perfectionist a longer time to complete a task than others. This can be a career killer. Someone else might be able to complete the assignment in much less time.
Additionally, this issue can carry over into personal life as well. If you are a perfectionist, getting ready will take you much longer than it will for others. This could lead to fights and arguments with spouses and family members, as well as consistently being late for dates, meetings, get-togethers and appointments.

May Probably End Up Alone
Another way perfectionism is bad is when it comes to relationships. Since a perfectionist needs to be perfect, he or she seeks a perfect mate as well. In this sense, they are looking for specific qualities in another person. Another way to put this is that they are looking for their Knight in Shining Armor or their Princess.
The odds of a perfectionist finding someone with all of these exact qualities are extremely rare. As a result, they tend to end up alone.

You're Afraid to Fail
At some point growing up, many of us begin to fear failing. I'm not certain when this happens or why, but it can be a destructive thing. It is OK to fail. In fact, I encourage failure and look forward to failing.
This isn't to say my goal is to fail all of the time. But I find that I learn more from failing than I do from succeeding. Failing builds character and helps me grow as a person.
Look at most professional sports teams and you will find failure. Many young teams that make the final series for the championship lose.(Real Madrid lost three semi finals consecutively before they finally became champions of Europe). This is because they don't know what to expect or how to prepare for the attention and hype. Many that do loose come back in the following years and win it all. They learned from their failure and improved.
Don't be afraid to fail. Embrace failure when it happens. Review everything that happened and learn from it.

Perfectionists Burn Out and are Unhealthy
Perfectionists tend to be stressed and have high levels of anxiety. Neither of these are good. Perfectionists give everything they do 110% and push themselves to make things perfect all of the time. Imagine trying to live where everything you do has to be right and perfect. It doesn't sound very fun does it? It almost sounds unattainable. Welcome to a typical day in the life of a perfectionist.
We place so much stress on ourselves we have health issues. At work, we burn out easily. We think that the job is extremely demanding and time consuming, but in reality, it is us that is extremely demanding. It is us that makes projects lasts weeks upon weeks so that they are perfect.

Final Thoughts
Many people relate perfectionism as a good quality when in fact it is a very destructive quality. If you are a perfectionist, you are better off learning to hit the reset button and give up some control sooner rather than later. The sooner you can learn that everything doesn't have to be perfect, the happier and healthier you will be.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Wins US National Critics Book Prize for “Americanah”

Ace Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is clearly having the best month of her life as she promotes her new book – “Americanah“.
Here’s another reason for her to go dancing in the wind - she has won the US National Critics Book Prize for her novel 'Americanah'.
The book was also selected as one of The New York Times’ 10 best books of 2013.
The National Critics Book Prize was first awarded in 1974 and is open to writers of all nationalities whose work has been published in the US.
Americanah was published in May 2013 by Alfred A. Knopf. It's a fictional novel that unravels the story of a young Nigerian woman who emigrates to America for a university education.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (born 15 September 1977) has been called "the most prominent" of a "procession of critically acclaimed young Anglophone authors [that] is succeeding in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature", and her string of awards keep substantiating that claim.
Congratulations to her!
